Wouldn't it be great if we could avoid the hassle of figuring out whether the images we use is copyright infringement or not? Wouldn't if be great if the photographs in our articles were taken by fellow Newsviners and free from outsourcing? And wouldn't it also be great if you could request a photograph to be taken specifically for your article?
That would be great, wouldn't it? It's not only great, it's perfectly possible with Newsvine Photo Pool, a wonderful stopgap measure implemented by resident photographer Mogmismo. A stopgap measure isn't exactly ideal but we need to show Newsvine that using our community's photography is a necessary aspect of the work that we do here.
Do you want to join this effort? Read the following.
Newsvine photographers
We need more photos in the pool. If you are already a Flickr member, please join the Newsvine Citizen Journalism Photo Pool group. If not, you can sign in with your Yahoo account.
Before you start adding all of your photographs, you need to consider if they fit the following guidelines. Photographs uploaded to the Newsvine Photo Pool should:
Writers needing a photograph
Before using a photograph, there are a couple guidelines you need follow:
Unfortunately, Newsvine's Flickr tool doesn't always work. If it's not, to access the photographs, please visit the Flickr group. You may manually search the pool or by tag. There a some additional steps you'll need to take:
A photograph is much more impacting than the words we use. A picture is worth a thousand words, after all. Using images from people that we know will not only alleviate any copyright concerns, it will allow us to make more of an impact in the world of media by having Newsvine photographers and writers work together.
Newsvine's staff often seeks input from it's users when making changes or implementing new features. Let's send a clear message.
This is a great idea Ben, I'm already a member of the group but haven't uploaded any pictures. I have lots of shots on my Flickr page though and if anyone cares to look and wants to use a picture I would be glad to change the permissions to CC and move to the group.
I'm clipping this to my column too for more visibility.
This is a really smart and creative idea Ben Josephs.
Make sure though, that all contributions are well organized and identified by date, location and subject, so that people can easily search for relevant photos that they need. Otherwise you'll have a mess of photos to search through like an old shoebox collection. Having it does no good, if nobody can find it.
Ben-
I'm already on flickr but don't often have need for a search. I may try some experimental searches by subject to see what happens and how easy it is to find specific material. As long as people can find the right CC photos, then they can find a way to get them posted.
One addition to your idea, a list of subject matter can in some respects be easier, as an addition to the flickr site. IE: Members here may have tons of photos that are of use, but uploading takes time. In some cases just asking for a subject list of what they are willing to make available with either CC, or another form of consent, might increase participation.
Ben, there in lies my dilemma I'm not sure any of my photo warrant being added. I mean, I have flowers, trees, sunsets, (mostly nature stuff) and some train photos, but I'm not sure any are good enough to be added to what is there already or would be appropriate.
So for right now I'll probably wait and see what else gets added and go from there.
rottlady
rottlady comes to our rescue, again. I'm not trying to take anything away from you Ben, but I wouldn't be here now, if it had not been for rottlady. I haven't looked at the details, but I'm pretty sure I'll be commenting and voting.
Don't undersell yourself Rottlady, you have a good eye. Besides, you never know what may come in handy to someone seeking a specific image for a specific use, and editing can alter an image to suit their purpose too. But the key is using descriptive labels so searching and finding are easier.
Personally I like to be asked before someone uses my work, to know what it's being used for, and that it's an appropriate usage. I just prefer to have that control, even though I usually consent. Plus, I've never digitized a lot of old negatives. Nor would I be in any rush to unless I knew there was a need.
Ben, I think both would be beneficial. That way the pool won't be flooded with things that are not of interest to everyone. Either that or create some Collections or different Sets so it would be easier to see everything.
Elizabeth @ 2.4,
I am always looking for sunset or sunrise pictures for some of the more inspirational things that I write. You know me, I seldom around to be able to take them myself! :)
Ok Mary, I'll add some of my favorites. But note, all of mine are sunsets, I don't have a good sunrise view.
Well azsky, I can add my support to both Elizabeth and Ben, and offer you some sunrises, sunsets, lunar eclipse, full moon, etc. But I haven't posted them to flickr as yet. I would be happy to do so with a few, if I had a general sense of what you were aiming for in your expression.
Ben, to answer your question from 2.7, I think you need both a site with photos, and somewhere that a simple content and contact list is available. My reason why is that writers and photographers sometimes produce their best work in collaboration with each other, and having the discussion and interaction. But there are always days where people need inspiration, and having some photos already posted provides that too.
Flickr has a batch organizer that makes it easier to tag, change the licenses on your photos or make different sets of them. I think making a Flickr group for this makes a lot of sense.
Ok, here's what I see.
The main benefit is that writers are NOT taking days to write a story, they are4 taking minutes, maybe hours at the most. they are NOT going to use a pool and ask for something, this is an impulse thing and they want some picture in a quick search. If you can't put them into the group on flickr where they can be searched there is no use for them (an alternative is to give blanket permission for use of all pictures posted by you on flickr and then give the url to your main page - assuming you have them grouped into individual albums by category or something
You have some writers here (scott, rottlady) why not do the market research and ask them if they plan out an article for a week later, coordinate back and forth; or if this is an "I need to find a picture in 30 minutes or less" thing
Eriq, you are right on how long it takes to think up an article and write it. Not very long. I might plan one out but as for getting it published and finding pictures for it I don't take more than a day. If I don't have the pictures I want in my picture files then I use Flickr CC.
But one thing is most of my article are based on pictures I have already taken so I might not be a very good example.
I've joined the Flickr group. I just added one photo that I used for a Newsvine article I wrote last year. Other than my artwork, all my photos are CC licensed and so could be used. Should there be a list of viners who use Flickr CC licensing? I wish there were a better way of knowing what kinds of photos our writers want.
This is a fantastic initiative! Great work, Ben.
Awesome. Pure awesome. I haven't done much photography lately, but this is a good excuse to get back at it :D
Great idea...Why not keep our creative ideas in the "vine" family...Count me in.
Cool. Joined flickr just so I can join the group. :)
Being a retired art teacher I have been adding a few photos to some of my articles. I like this idea and photos do add an interesting element to an article.
I'm sold.
It is a great idea, but I think photographers are greatly underrated. I think users should pay a nominal fee ( and I mean nomeinal, like $2.00). After all, the possibility of been read by thounands of people is great and taking photographs is a serious task, requires skill and knowledge, etc...
I guess you are right about the human nature aspect. I am sure there are many almost-pro-photographers in the vine and I think it should work for photographers also, not only for the writers; so a happy medium should be found that benefits the many. Probably the compensation was a bad idea, but a gallery where the best amateur photos would be available for the asking-the gallery been the prize for the photographers- could work. But this alternative would require maintenance and a decision making process.
I used a stock photohgraphy agency that pays me $0.50 per sold photograph and I have sold around 50. This as nto the rating when they were starting. They change dtehrules on the way to stardom... I stopped sending any photos to the agency; they sell them depending on price form $15, $25 each. What is that??? I have sld 50 of mine which is a good rate, I would say, and earned $25 that I cannto get because I have to have $50 in my account to receive a check. Can you believe this???
A well thought out photo can take some time to produce. You have to look at lighting, backgrounds and try several times until you have the right picture. It is work! I hope you don't get lot of pet and flower pictures.
I would like to hear other ideas about the process, and yes, you can invite me if you are serious, but I would not use Flickr as proposed. This is the reason: The CC allows the pics to be used by practically anyone.
I propose the following. Use Flickr as it is. I think we should grant a ONE TIME use to any writer. They see the picture they lie form our stock, they contact the author an dthey grant a one time use right tothe photo. The authour should be included in the credits fo rteh ariticle, as in a regular magazine article. The picture stays in Flickr with the current copyright, which by the way, does not deterr the thieves to use them as they please.
What do you think? It's a contract between the writer and photographer. Compensation? anything beyond $0.50 is ok!!! :D Ah, and I Suggest using Paypal. Easy. Not all photographers are equal, so each photographer can set his/her prices which shoudl eb nominal (open to discussion). If Flcikr knows about this I am sure they will want their share.... So, hushhhh ! Teh size shoudl be small, like 320 x 240 since the article areas do not allow a lot of space to be used. Am I right about this? Please nlighten me if wrong.
Good day!
Warning. It is illegal to sell stuff on newsvine or to advertise it for sale. That includes pictures.
No you can not do this through newsvine (nor link to such a group from newsvine)
Excuse me for the typos, I am in a hurry but wanted to leave feedback
My preferences are as follows:
1) Any Newsviner who wants to use an image of mine should request one by subject through the Vine's "Contact this Author" option - I can decline to honor the request
2) The author will receive the photo via a return e-mail
3) My name and © symbol will appear on the image
4) The terms of use are "One-time rights" (for the specific article/author only) and the author will let me know once the image appears on Newsvine
5) The image may not be modified in any way
6) The author requesting the image agrees not to give my e-mail address nor any other information about me to anyone
7) There will be no fee whatsoever for the use of the image
8) I (the photographer) can, at any time, direct the author to remove the image immediately from the article
A. Macarthur
1) eliminates the "Impulse" buyer - this may be what you want though
3) image caption or article should add "used with permission" (important legalism)
5) you should allow for reduction in size; if they have multiple images on their article they may have to reduce the size to get the page to load properly (many would get the nasty red X instead of the picture due to time outs)
8) the technology may not - exactly - allow this (i.e. it will be in the reader's cache and could reload even though it is off newsvine; it may be in serch engines "cached" versions of the page) - the author may remove it but it could still show up
With screen capture programs there is nothing that can't be copied and saved by a user. All you are really doing is trying to make the author / user responsible for things he can't control. If your pictures are for profit you need to keep them off the Internet, basically. You use photoshop, you know how easy it is to slightly manipulate images
NOTE: (to a. and to potential users) there are several big stock photo companies on the Net (jupiterimages, etc. - see their terms); free photos abound that you can access by searching flickr, google, ask, pixsy, yahoo, zooomr, etc.
I agree with all you stated. eriq. I may reconsider my offer as the caveats you raised are serious.
Thank you.
A. Mac
I enjoy writing prose ,haiku, a toon or two ,lol perhaps even a tune, and photography on the basic level, snap and view waa hoo!! And doing with it whatever comes naturally via inspiration. A perfect picture for me is never planned,(my profile pic is a sample) a perfect writing is not sporadic, getting them on the same paper is an achievement in heart and mind, But I tell you what. I am having a heck of a time getting them on the same web page in the order that makes me feel complete in my work . I had MSN Web Sites (years), I could do that there, use a photo, make a back ground, write my text - in color, put it in a frame all on the same web page, and print it out . Sadly they closed. I lost so much stuff, I still fret, so much I cant get back the migration didn't work for me. So much I will never remember exactly as I had it . Sorta dampened my inspirations, I have albums at web shots, I have prose on lulu , practice places like my space and yahoo, since Msn groups closed whats left on a same page is my articles I have written or used my pics and posted is here at Newsvine.I Am struggling past writers block. looking for incentives I have flash and am testing my use in it, my documents are full of things, my computer is full of programs, soft ware, uploads, downloads, share ware, uni codes, beta bytes, and meta bits lol geesh I really don't want another place to store my stuff in or to store in my stuff, I want to work it all out on the same page, background, picture, prose in frame who knows perhaps a bouncing heart?
